Forest products and services

The standing forest market

re.green is a large-scale ecological restoration company, a work that is monetized through forest products and services.

High-integrity carbon credits, sustainable native timber, seedlings and seeds: everything we generate is proof that restoring nature is an economically viable, scalable and necessary business.

We believe we are helping to build a new paradigm: that of the value of the living forest. A market that Brazil — with its biomes, its knowledge and its territory — is uniquely positioned to lead.

“Forests are green infrastructure. For centuries, humanity built roads and cities as infrastructure — often destroying nature to do so. Now it is time to rebuild nature itself, at scale, as essential infrastructure for our future; an infrastructure that generates commercial returns and benefits for communities.”

Thiago Picolo, CEO, re.green

High-Integrity Carbon Credits

Removing CO₂e from the atmosphere with high integrity and quality, generating benefits for people, the climate and nature.

A carbon removal credit, or CRU (Carbon Removal Unit), is a unit that proves, in a verified and traceable way, that a given amount of CO₂e has been effectively removed from the atmosphere. To issue them, a project goes through a long process of development, validation, monitoring, technical audit and verification by independent bodies, following methodologies and criteria defined by international carbon standards. Only after these stages are completed can the credits actually be issued, delivered and traded.

Sustainable native timber

(native silviculture)

A high-value forest product generated within the ecological restoration curve itself, while preserving the project’s quality and biodiversity.

We are the first project developers to combine native-timber silviculture with carbon projects. Native silviculture makes large-scale ecological restoration possible in regions where land prices are high, such as the Atlantic Forest. These regions are typically the ones that have suffered most from degradation over decades, with low potential for natural regeneration. Without timber, it would be impossible to restore these regions at scale.

In timber-based restoration models, we choose species that combine ecological relevance for the biome with high commercial value — such as jequitibá-rosa, jatobá, andiroba and pau-brasil — planted in a mixed system alongside other native species. Throughout the growth process, we manage these trees in step with the natural rhythms of ecological succession: at the right moment for each species, a single cutting cycle removes a few individuals from the system — while many others keep growing and composing the forest, with no further extraction interventions. This controlled disturbance opens space for new species to arrive and establish themselves, renewing the area’s diversity.

“After centuries of creating wealth through the destruction of nature, we are strengthening a model of development and wealth creation built on rebuilding nature.”

Bernardo Strassburg, Founder, re.green

The result is a restored area and a rare, extremely high-value product that makes restoration financially viable in the places where it matters most, while biodiversity re-establishes itself from day one.

In this process, re.green is developing a value chain for certified native timber that does not yet exist. We will build state-of-the-art sawmills in our project regions, working to train small local producers.

Seedlings and Seeds

Every tree starts as a seedling. And every seedling starts with a seed collected from the right tree, in the right place — because local genetics are irreplaceable for restoration to work with high integrity and high quality. In the large-scale restoration market, demand for seedlings and seeds is growing: both as a challenge and as an opportunity.

re.green works with a portfolio of around 300 native species from the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest, defining the ideal combination among them for each project.

To secure supply at this scale and with this diversity, we strengthen the production chain: we count on a network of more than 20 local partner nurseries, close to our projects, closely supported and guided by our technical team. As a result, most of our seedlings are produced within their native location.

In addition, we have our own production at Bioflora by re.green, one of the largest native-species nurseries in Brazil, with a production capacity of nearly 3 million seedlings per year and potential to expand to up to 10 million. Bioflora also serves as our powerful research and development center for seedlings and seeds, increasing the quality and precision of our operation.

“If you want to buy 50 million eucalyptus seedlings, you can. 50 million ipê seedlings, not yet. We are dealing with this by helping to develop this segment.”

Thiago Picolo, CEO, re.green

On the seed front, we train collectors in the communities neighboring our projects — an effort that has already led to the creation of the SEMEAR Association, in Vera Cruz (MA), born out of the Entre Rios project, in Maracaçumé.

The seedlings and seeds we produce supply our own projects and others that want to restore with the same quality we demand of ourselves.
