“Solutions for climate and nature must go together, says Thiago Picolo, CEO of re.green
The economist, who participated in Climate Week in New York, explains the ecological restoration project the company is undertaking in the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest and discusses expansion into other biomes
“re.green defines itself as an ‘ecological restoration’ company. What does that mean?
We take areas that were deforested in the past—decades or centuries ago—and restore the original ecosystem. We do this in the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest, with two major advantages. One is geospatial analysis—using algorithms and tools—to determine where it is truly worth investing to restore a deforested area. Not only in terms of that restoration’s ability to ‘sequester’ carbon, but also to positively contribute to promoting biodiversity and creating opportunities for surrounding communities. The second advantage is that we’re proficient in different restoration models. If a region has been severely degraded for a long time, more processes will be needed. In a region that was deforested more recently, you can rely on natural regeneration. Understanding what to do is crucial. If you do something wrong, you might end up spending much more than necessary—or spending too little and failing to achieve a high-quality forest.”
