He was the founder and Executive Director of the International Institute for Sustainability and a professor at PUC-RJ. A co-developer of the National Restoration Plan, he is a member of the UN Scientific Council for the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. He led the development of the new global restoration target for the UN CBD and of the global priority regions for restoration.
