re.green and Agro Penido: A Rural Partnership to Restore 600 Hectares of Amazon Rainforest
January 14, 2025
Rural activity and restoration: a partnership where everyone benefits.
We have closed our first rural partnership, which will restore 600 hectares of Amazon rainforest on Agro Penido’s Pioneira and Darro farms in Querência, Mato Grosso. These areas were part of Fazenda Roncador, one of the ten largest agribusiness properties in Brazil, known for its unique 4P integration model—plants, pasture animals, people, and planet. This partnership highlights the valuable opportunities that arise when agriculture and restoration come together, paving the way for increased profitability within a regenerative economy and greater scale for native forest recovery.
“Partnerships like this demonstrate that revenue diversification within a single property, through the carbon market, is not only possible—it’s a proven reality.” – Thiago Picolo, CEO of re.green
re.green will restore marginal areas of the farms with native Amazonian species. These areas, located between croplands and Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs), have not been used for production in the past 11 years. We will manage the entire process—from soil preparation, planting, and monitoring to maintenance. The landowner, in this case Agro Penido, is compensated through carbon credits. This enhances the property’s profitability while promoting biodiversity recovery, protecting water resources, and increasing the ecosystem’s resilience to threats such as wildfires.
“This partnership represents a major milestone for re.green because we strongly believe in the power of rural partnerships to scale restoration. We’ve tested our model on our own land and are now ready to bring the same level of excellence to partner areas.”
Thiago Picolo, CEO of re.green
The area to be restored in early 2025 is located near Xingu National Park—a vital territory for conserving Brazil’s biodiversity and indigenous cultures. This project sets an important precedent for environmental compliance and diversification in a region facing environmental challenges and illegal deforestation.
Agro Penido is a pioneer in agro-environmental practices and, among other initiatives, is a founding member of the Liga do Araguaia (Araguaia League) movement. Created by Caio Penido with support from Grupo Roncador, the Liga do Araguaia unites cattle ranchers to promote sustainable livestock farming through the dissemination, adoption, and monitoring of best practices. The initiative emphasizes low-carbon agriculture (the Carbono Araguaia project) and creates biodiversity value through payments for environmental services.
The Liga do Araguaia, founded in 2014, now includes around 60 ranchers in the Araguaia Valley region of Mato Grosso. It operates independently with its own governance, coordinated by a board of directors that includes some of its founders.
For Caio Penido, one of Agro Penido’s owners:
“This partnership is a milestone for agro-environmentalism where everyone wins. In 2014, when we launched the Carbono Araguaia project (Liga do Araguaia), I was certain that carbon would one day be monetized. I hope our partnership serves as an example for other producers to consider carbon credits as a new commodity, adding value and competitiveness to agriculture, livestock, and the forest.”
re.green currently has about 12,000 hectares under restoration in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes through science-based initiatives that recreate biodiverse forests, delivering lasting benefits for both nature and people.
We know this is just the beginning of re.green’s work through rural partnerships, and we are honored to start this journey with Agro Penido.
